Significant events
- “The financial year to 31st May 2025 was another challenging period with continued pressure on consumer spend and a significant increase in bureaucracy and taxation.”
- “Tanners has continued to demonstrate resilience through the recent turbulent years. We have navigated through Covid and Brexit as well as other supply chain disruption (for example from the closure of the Suez Canal), as well as several short harvests in key wine growing areas, either from frost and hailstone or wildfires.”
- “We had to contend with a level of inflation not seen for a generation and shortages of glass and other raw materials used in the bottling processes due to the Russia / Ukraine conflict.”
- “We saw a 4.9% decline in revenue in the year to 31st May 2025 compared to the prior year, in part due to a weaker Bordeaux harvest which reduced en primeur sales, and also due to a decrease in consumer spend.”
- “In August 2023 the duty regime was changed with the underlying principal of taxing higher alcohol drinks more. Whilst we support this aim, the method of how this has been achieved has been to increase the rate of taxation across the majority of wines sold in the United Kingdom at a rate considerably in excess of inflation.”
- “Our sector has had another cost imposition placed on it by the UK Government following the introduction of the Extended Packaging Regulations ("EPR"). This is in effect a taxation of packaging.”
- “Our sector faces a further challenge from deposit schemes. As with the EPR, the principal of a deposit recycling scheme makes a lot of sense and works well in numerous other countries. The risk and uncertainty lies with implementation. Currently we face a situation of differing schemes between England, Wales and Scotland.”

Each % is (latest − prior) ÷ |prior| for the line item as filed. Periods don't have to be exactly 12 months apart — a long or short period (typical around incorporation or year-end changes) will distort the comparison. Lines a company doesn't report are omitted. About these numbers
